Camus's 1957 collection — the same year he won the Nobel Prize — arrives translated by Justin O'Brien, in a jacket still carrying its library markings: a "discard" stamp, a Katonah Village Library bookplate. A life spent being borrowed, and now a life spent being kept.

Camus will not let us off the hook so easily — he keeps forcing us to ask what "nature" actually means, in a life or in a person. — Anthony
